The many residents of Hull-House gave of their time and expertise in order to ensure success. We call that crowdsourcing now!
The Jane Addams Papers welcomes volunteers and interns to help with our work. Interns and volunteers can either come to the project offices at Ramapo College of New Jersey (Mahwah, NJ), or work remotely from their own locations.
Graduate Internships
We are currently seeking graduate student interns to assist the project with two tasks.
1) Researcher for Selected Papers of Jane Addams, Volume 4
We are researching and drafting annotation for documents selected for the Volume 4, which covers the years 1901-1913. Interns work under the supervision of one of the Project editors, are assigned topics to research using primary sources, newspaper databases, and secondary materials. Researchers gather results in an organized report with citations and respond to follow-up queries from the editors. This research requires careful attention to detail and ability to work independently.
Interns are expected to meet monthly with editorial staff, but research can be conducted remotely. The project uses Basecamp, a cloud-based project management system.
We seek graduate students experienced with research in American history and European history, with an interest in social history, peace, women’s history, and the Progressive Era.
To apply, send an e-mail and c.v. to Cathy Moran Hajo (chajo@ramapo.edu) along with one academic reference.
2) Text and Metadata Editor for Jane Addams Digital Edition
This intern will edit and correct biographical and organizational entries produced by student staff for the Jane Addams Digital Edition, undertaking research as necessary. Some of the tasks include stylistic editing of the content, adding additional metadata, such as associating people with events and organizations, adding subject tags, and map points, and locating images to represent the people, organizations and events. The intern will also draft some of the entries for some of the more important organizations and events.
Interns are expected to meet monthly with editorial staff, but research can be conducted remotely. The project uses Omeka, a cloud-based content management system to build the digital edition.
